What cemeteries does Smyrna own?

Answer

The City of Smyrna manages three historic cemeteries:

  • Smyrna Memorial Cemetery located on Memorial Place in downtown Smyrna was started by the Methodist Church in the1830s and turned over to the city in 1959.
  • Daniell Cemetery is located at 3761 Cloudland Drive in the Bennett Woods subdivision in Smyrna. The cemetery was started by Robert Daniell in 1862 and turned over to the city in 2018.
  • Mt. Zion Cemetery is located at 1514 Hawthorne Avenue in Smyrna and was started by the Mt. Zion Baptist Church around 1900. It was the traditional burying ground for African American people in Smyrna. The City of Smyrna took over the cemetery in 2018 and carried out extensive restoration work.

The city does not own or manage New Smyrna Cemetery which is located across the street from Mt. Zion Cemetery on Hawthorne Avenue. It was started as the New Smyrna Cemetery Association by five local Smyrna men in 1910 when Smyrna Memorial Cemetery filled up. It has always been privately owned and maintained. The current owner is Bobby Martin.
